Bengaluru: A Border Collie named Tsunami, once abandoned and abused as a puppy, has captured hearts around the world after helping rescue survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings following the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela.
Tsunami is part of the K-SAR ECID search and rescue canine unit, where he works alongside his handler, Jorge Beens. During rescue operations after the powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, the highly trained dog helped emergency teams locate multiple survivors buried under the rubble, becoming a symbol of hope amid the tragedy.
From abandoned puppy to lifesaver
Before becoming a rescue dog, Tsunami had a difficult start to life. He was rescued after being abandoned and allegedly abused, before being adopted and trained for disaster response.
Through years of specialised training, the energetic Border Collie developed exceptional search abilities, eventually joining K-SAR ECID, a canine rescue unit that responds to natural disasters and emergencies.

During the Venezuela earthquake response, Tsunami’s sharp instincts helped rescuers identify survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures, allowing emergency teams to carry out life-saving operations. Reports say the rescue dog helped locate at least 13 survivors, earning widespread admiration on social media.
