In a tragic incident early Tuesday morning, a one-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by the family dog inside their Long Island City apartment in Queens, New York City, CBS News reported. The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed the attack took place around 6:30 am at a home on 12th Street.

According to police, the infant was sleeping between her mother and stepfather when their six-month-old German Shepherd-Pit Bull mix suddenly turned aggressive and attacked the child. The mother told authorities that the baby was asleep when the dog launched the unexpected assault.

Neighbors expressed their shock over the heartbreaking event, describing the neighborhood as pet-friendly, with many dogs known for their gentle and playful behavior. “As a mother of three, it was heartbreaking,” said Maria Gutierrez, a nearby resident. “You never expect your pet to harm your child.”

Animal Control has taken custody of the dog. Officials are currently questioning the parents, but no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation into the circumstances of the attack is still ongoing.
