The Pacific Coast Highway remains closed for what could be weeks as extensive repairs and utility work progress, according to Malibu’s Mayor Doug Stewart. During a community discussion on Thursday, Stewart highlighted the severe damage and the significant work required to restore the road. He explained that while the roadway itself is intact, the surrounding areas need substantial effort, preventing an immediate reopening. “The repairs are extensive and will prevent us from reopening the road within a few days; it could take weeks,” Stewart noted.

Additionally, crews are preparing for potential rainfall, as the hillsides scorched by recent fires remain highly susceptible to landslides. Stewart warned that if a storm hits, it could result in disastrous consequences for the region unless adequate preparations are made.

Meanwhile, California Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin cautioned Pacific Palisades residents against accepting low offers for their properties in the wake of the wildfires. Irwin urged homeowners not to “sell for a fraction of their property’s worth,” emphasizing the resources available to rebuild, including generous insurance subsidies. Governor Gavin Newsom also took action, signing an executive order extending a ban on price gouging for hotels, motels, and rental properties to safeguard wildfire victims from predatory practices.

Finally, the New Year’s Eve fire in Pacific Palisades has been confirmed as completely extinguished, with fire officials assuring the community that the area was thoroughly monitored for safety.
