A petition demanding the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship has gathered over 250,000 signatures as of Tuesday. The initiative accuses the billionaire of undermining Canada’s sovereignty, citing his support for Donald Trump and alleged alignment with foreign interests.
Musk, born in South Africa, obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk. The petition, launched on February 20, claims that he has become part of a foreign government seeking to erase Canada’s sovereignty. It also references Trump’s past statements about annexing Canada.
In response, Musk mocked the petition on his platform X (formerly Twitter), posting that “Canada is not a real country.” The post has since been deleted.
The petition was led by Charlie Angus, a Canadian federal lawmaker from the New Democratic Party, who described Musk as an enemy of the country.
Though Canadian law allows citizenship revocation for fraud or military service against Canada, there is no legal precedent for removing citizenship based on political influence. Additionally, petitions to Parliament do not mandate action, though they can prompt a government response.
As of now, Parliament remains suspended until March 24, and officials have not indicated any steps toward revoking Musk’s citizenship.
