Kyiv, August 23 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine during his landmark visit to the country. Meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Mariinsky Palace, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace and offered to play an active role in facilitating resolution efforts.

During their bilateral meeting, PM Modi asserted, “India was never neutral; we have always been on the side of peace.” He underscored India’s readiness to engage proactively in peace initiatives, stating, “I want to assure you and the entire world that this is India’s commitment. We believe that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is of utmost importance.”

Recalling his previous discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, PM Modi highlighted his consistent message that solutions are not found on the battlefield but through dialogue and diplomacy. He expressed a willingness to contribute personally to peace efforts, saying, “I would like to discuss specifically the path to peace and progress. India is ready to play an active role in every effort for peace.”

PM Modi’s visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine, a milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two nations. He acknowledged the significance of this historic visit and extended gratitude to President Zelenskyy for the warm reception and hospitality.

The Prime Minister also thanked the Ukrainian government for its assistance during the evacuation of Indian students at the height of the conflict. “I express my gratitude to you for your help during this time of crisis. The world knows very well that during the war we played two roles: the humanitarian approach and support for our nationals,” PM Modi noted.

In a gesture of continued collaboration, PM Modi extended an invitation to President Zelenskyy to visit India. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar confirmed this development, stating, “PM Modi has invited Ukraine President Zelenskyy to visit India. We expect that, as per his convenience, President Zelenskyy will visit India.”

The visit concluded with PM Modi’s affirmation of the historical nature of his trip. “My visit to Ukraine was historic. I came to this great nation with the aim of deepening India-Ukraine friendship. I had productive talks with President Zelenskyy. India firmly believes that peace must always prevail,” he said.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reciprocated the sentiment, thanking PM Modi for his visit and support. He emphasized the importance of respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and the UN Charter, reinforcing the critical nature of international support.

PM Modi departed for India later on Friday night, marking the end of a highly successful visit aimed at strengthening ties and advocating for peace.
