Doha: Arab and Muslim ministers meet for urgent talks

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani strongly criticised Israel during an emergency meeting of Arab and Muslim foreign ministers held in Doha. The high-level gathering was convened ahead of a major regional summit expected to address the escalating situation in Gaza.

Sheikh Mohammed underscored that the international community must end what he described as “double standards” in addressing the conflict, calling for accountability over Israel’s military operations.

Call for accountability and unified stance

The Qatari leader emphasised that unchecked strikes and political inaction had worsened the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He urged the international community to adopt a more balanced approach and ensure that civilian suffering does not continue unabated.

He added that regional unity was essential for achieving meaningful results, noting that the foreign ministers’ consultations were designed to align their countries’ positions before the broader summit.

Coordination with Egypt and the United States

Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s ongoing coordination with Egypt and the United States to facilitate a ceasefire agreement. While dialogue remains active, he cautioned that without consequences for escalating violence, negotiations risk losing credibility.

He highlighted that mediation efforts must be backed by political will and firm action from the wider international community.

Regional response expected at summit

The upcoming summit of Arab and Muslim leaders, to be held in Doha, is expected to produce a joint statement and outline collective measures to address the conflict. Analysts say the meeting will be closely watched as regional powers seek to present a unified diplomatic response.

Diplomatic sources suggest that humanitarian access, reconstruction, and long-term security guarantees will feature prominently in the talks.

Broader context

The Doha meeting comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, with Gaza witnessing intensified strikes and a mounting humanitarian toll. International organisations have repeatedly appealed for restraint and humanitarian corridors, while mediation efforts remain ongoing.

Qatar, which has positioned itself as a key mediator, continues to play an active role in engaging with both regional and global partners.
