Russia launched a devastating attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Christmas Day, with over 70 missiles and 100 drones targeting critical facilities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed. This marked the 13th large-scale assault on Ukraine’s power grid in 2024, further straining the nation’s resources as winter temperatures plummet.

At least one person was killed in Dnipropetrovsk, and six were injured in Kharkiv, where seven missile strikes hit civilian areas, leaving half a million homes without heating. Kyiv imposed rolling blackouts to stabilize the grid, while DTEK, Ukraine’s largest energy provider, reported severe damage to its thermal power plants.

Zelensky accused Russia of deliberately timing the attack to coincide with Ukraine’s Christmas celebrations on December 25, a date newly adopted to distance from Russian Orthodox traditions. “What could be more inhumane?” he remarked.

Ukraine retaliated with an overnight strike on a Russian command post in Kursk, killing four. Meanwhile, in Russia’s North Ossetia, falling drone debris caused a deadly explosion at a shopping center.

The attack drew international condemnation, with Moldova’s President Maia Sandu denouncing the missile that violated Moldovan airspace. Poland scrambled fighter jets amid heightened regional tensions.

This follows a deadly Russian strike on Kryvyi Rih on Christmas Eve, Zelensky’s hometown, which killed one and injured 17.
