At least two people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at a church in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Wednesday evening, US police officials said, triggering panic and a large-scale manhunt for suspects.
The shooting occurred at a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a funeral service. According to reports cited by ABC News, six people sustained injuries in the attack.
Suspect flees, manhunt launched
Salt Lake City Police confirmed that at least one suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and law enforcement agencies have launched an extensive search operation in the area.
Police cordoned off the surroundings of the church and urged residents to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
“Not a random incident,” police say
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said authorities do not believe the attack was religiously motivated.
“We believe this was not a random incident,” Redd told Reuters, adding that investigators are working to determine the motive behind the shooting and whether the victims were specifically targeted.
Mayor expresses shock and grief
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it deeply disturbing.
“This should never have happened outside a place of worship. This should never have happened outside a celebration of life,” the mayor said, offering condolences to the victims’ families and the wider community.
Community shaken by violence
The shooting has sent shockwaves across Salt Lake City, particularly because it occurred during a funeral — a moment meant for mourning and remembrance. Emergency medical teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, and their conditions are being monitored.
Police said further details would be shared once more information becomes available, including the identities of the victims and suspects.
