Singapore Enhances Border Measures for Mpox Detection

Singapore, Aug 23 : In response to the ongoing mpox outbreak, Singapore has implemented new screening measures at its airports and sea checkpoints. Starting Friday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has introduced temperature and visual screening protocols for all inbound travellers and crew members arriving from areas affected by mpox.

According to the MOH, all travelers must adhere to health advisories issued at air checkpoints and take personal precautions to prevent infection. The ministry emphasized that travelers are required to report any symptoms related to mpox and provide details about their recent travel history before entering Singapore. Individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, rash, or other mpox-related signs will be directed for a medical assessment upon arrival.

As of Thursday, Singapore has confirmed 13 cases of mpox for the current year. All reported cases are of the Clade II variant, which is less severe compared to Clade I. There have been no reported cases of mpox Clade I in Singapore to date.

The MOH, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, is enhancing surveillance capabilities at the country’s borders. This step is part of a broader effort to strengthen the nation’s response to the mpox threat and ensure effective monitoring of potential cases.

Currently, there are no direct flights between Singapore and countries experiencing significant mpox outbreaks. The precautionary measures in place to detect and manage mpox cases remain consistent with previous protocols, reflecting the ongoing commitment to safeguard public health.

The global situation has seen the World Health Organization (WHO) declare mpox a public health emergency of international concern as of August 14. The outbreak has primarily affected regions in Africa, though there have been reports of the more severe mpox Clade I in Sweden and Thailand. However, no local spread has been reported in these countries.

MOH remains vigilant and will continue to monitor the situation closely. The ministry has assured that its preparedness and response measures will be adjusted based on the evolving public health risk.
