A wave of grief has swept through the Sulphur community following the death of six-year-old McKinli “Mack” Bauer, who passed away on Sunday after battling a rare and aggressive brain tumour, her family said.
McKinli, who turned six in November, had been fighting Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and terminal form of brain cancer, for several months. Her family described her as a “little ray of sunshine” whose courage and spirit touched everyone she met.
Community rallies around young fighter
Despite her young age and serious illness, McKinli’s life was filled with love, joy and unforgettable moments, thanks largely to the extraordinary support of the Sulphur community. Residents and local authorities came together to make her days special and meaningful.
McKinli was honoured with several symbolic roles in the town, becoming an honorary student at Sulphur High School, a grocery store worker for a day, a hairdresser, mayor for a day and even a junior fire chief. These gestures brought smiles not only to McKinli but also to those who participated in celebrating her life.
Family members said these moments gave her happiness and helped create lasting memories during her difficult journey.
City expresses condolences
The Sulphur city administration expressed condolences to McKinli’s family through a social media post, acknowledging her impact on the community and the love she inspired across the town.
Residents have also shared messages of remembrance online, describing her as a symbol of strength, hope and kindness.
Celebration of life planned
A celebration of life service for McKinli will be held at 6 pm on Saturday, January 31, at the Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church hall. The family has invited community members to attend and remember a child who brought light and unity to the town.
McKinli’s passing has left an indelible mark on Sulphur, reminding many of the power of compassion and community in the face of loss.
