A simple social media post has brought together around 170 people from across the United Kingdom for a mass baptism in the sea at Bigbury-on-Sea in Devon, in an event marked by worship, prayer and public declarations of Christian faith.
A digital invitation leads to a remarkable gathering
The initiative was organised by Merlin Kraft, who runs the Christian social media channel BibleLadUK. After posting a video of a baptism, Kraft received messages from people asking whether they could also be baptised.
With the support of Calvary Chapel Plymouth, he first organised a beach baptism at Jennycliff in Plymouth in June, where 28 people were baptised. Following further interest online, another open invitation was issued for a gathering at Bigbury-on-Sea.
The response was far greater than expected, with people travelling from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and several parts of England. One couple reportedly travelled from Leeds and walked for about three hours after reaching Kingsbridge, determined to attend the baptism.
Hundreds gather as baptisms continue
The gathering included a Gospel message, worship and baptisms conducted by pastors and church leaders. More than 100 Bibles were also distributed, while volunteers provided food and information to help participants connect with local churches.
Kraft described the response as something he had not witnessed before, while being cautious about describing it as a revival. He said the growing interest suggested that more people were willing to ask questions about Christianity and explore their faith.
The event has also drawn attention to the role of social media in connecting people with Christian communities and faith gatherings beyond traditional church settings.
