Spain dominate in Konya

Konya: Spain delivered a statement performance in their World Cup 2026 European qualifier, crushing Türkiye 6–0 in front of more than 40,000 home fans. The one-sided match took place at the Medas Konya Büyükşehir Stadium and marked Türkiye’s heaviest defeat in decades.

Spain began strongly, scoring in the sixth minute and never allowing the hosts to recover. The result leaves Spain at the top of Group E with six points from two games, while Türkiye slip to third with only three points.

Merino hat-trick leads the rout

Midfielder Mikel Merino was the star of the night, scoring a hat-trick that included two first-half goals and a spectacular strike just after the interval. His energy and control in midfield set the tone for Spain’s relentless attacking play.

Pedri also shone brightly, netting twice and pulling the strings throughout the game. Ferran Torres added the fourth goal, finishing off a swift counter-attack that highlighted Spain’s clinical edge.

Türkiye struggle to cope

Türkiye’s defence collapsed under Spain’s fluid passing and attacking combinations. Despite the presence of talented youngsters such as Arda Güler, the hosts created little of note and were unable to match the intensity of the visitors.

Güler, however, showed flashes of quality with tidy passing and intelligent movement, though he could not influence the scoreline. The result has sparked concerns over Türkiye’s qualifying campaign and raised questions about their tactical setup.

Spain’s midfield brilliance

Spain’s midfield control proved decisive. Pedri orchestrated play with vision and composure, while Merino’s late runs into the box consistently troubled Türkiye. Youngster Lamine Yamal impressed as well, contributing assists and injecting creativity on the wings.

The balance between experienced performers and emerging talents suggests Spain are well-prepared for the long road to the 2026 World Cup. Analysts have already described the match as one of Spain’s most complete performances in recent years.

Outlook for both teams

Spain’s commanding win has boosted confidence in their squad depth and tactical approach, setting them up as one of the early favourites in the qualifiers. With two wins in two games, they have already established control over Group E.

Türkiye, meanwhile, face an uphill task to regroup and respond quickly. The heavy defeat at home has left fans and pundits demanding stronger defensive organisation and a clearer strategy to avoid further setbacks in the campaign.
