A rare handwritten letter by Steve Jobs, the late Apple co-founder, expressing his desire to visit India and attend the Kumbh Mela, has been auctioned for an incredible $500,312.50 (approximately INR 4.32 crore). The letter, dated February 23, 1974, on Jobs’ 19th birthday, was addressed to his childhood friend Tim Brown. In it, Jobs reveals his spiritual side, expressing his wish to attend the Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu pilgrimage, and his plans to leave for India in March 1974.

“I wish to go to India for the Kumbh Mela, which starts in April. I will be leaving sometime in March, not really certain yet,” Jobs wrote. The letter offers a glimpse into Jobs’ deep interest in Zen Buddhism and Hinduism, signing off with “Shanti, Steve Jobs.” He also mentions experiencing emotional moments, saying, “I cried many times.” Jobs’ spiritual journey would lead him to the ashram of Neem Karoli Baba in Uttarakhand, though he learned upon reaching Nainital that Baba had passed away the previous year. Despite this, Jobs stayed at Kainchi Dham ashram, finding peace in the teachings of the late Baba.

During his seven-month stay in India, Jobs immersed himself in Indian culture, returning home unrecognizable with a shaved head, Indian robes, and deeply tanned skin.

The letter was auctioned by Bonhams for over $500,000, giving collectors a rare piece of Jobs’ personal history. While he never attended the Kumbh Mela, Jobs’ wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, has honored his wish by attending the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, India. Laurene, who was given the Hindu name “Kamala” by her guru, has been participating in spiritual practices alongside a 40-member team.
