Sydney: A bishop in Sydney who was violently attacked during a live-streamed sermon has spoken out about his recovery and his forgiveness towards his assailant, saying, “You are my son.”

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, leader of the Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, was injured in the head and chest by a 16-year-old assailant on Monday, leading to unrest among members of the Assyrian Christian community in western Sydney.

Providing an update on his condition, Emmanuel assured that he is on the path to recovery. The Wakeley area is home to a significant population of Assyrian Christians who have sought refuge from persecution and conflict in countries like Iraq and Syria.

Emmanuel, who has a substantial online following, has been known for his outspoken views on various issues, including criticism of Covid-19 vaccines, lockdowns, and Islam.

In a YouTube video released on Tuesday, Emmanuel expressed his forgiveness towards his attacker, addressing them directly, “You are my son, I love you, and I will always pray for you.” He extended this forgiveness to whoever may have orchestrated the attack.

The teenage suspect was hospitalized following the incident, with authorities stating that his treatment would likely span several days.

Emmanuel called for peace and urged calm among his followers, emphasizing the importance of respecting the law and cooperating with law enforcement directives. He stressed the significance of being law-abiding citizens and behaving in accordance with Christian values.

Following the attack, there were reports of unrest outside the church, with congregants and community members gathering at the site. Some individuals engaged in violent behavior, resulting in injuries to police officers and damage to multiple police vehicles.

In response to the violence, authorities have arrested a 19-year-old individual and warned of further arrests in the coming days.
