Sydney has officially been recognized as home to the world’s top coffee shop, surpassing its long-time competitor, Melbourne.
A global ranking of cafés has awarded Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters the number one spot, ahead of Onyx Coffee Lab (Arkansas, USA), Gota Coffee Experts (Vienna, Austria), Proud Mary Coffee (Melbourne, Australia), and Tim Wendelboe (Oslo, Norway). Other cafés in the top ten hailed from Singapore, France, Malaysia, and Colombia.
The list, titled “World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops,” evaluated cafés on coffee quality, food standards, sustainability efforts, and customer service, incorporating both public feedback and expert assessments.
Jody Leslie, general manager of Toby’s Estate, expressed excitement over the win, saying, “We’ve been dedicated to crafting outstanding coffee for years, and this recognition means the world to us.”
The Chippendale flagship store in Sydney earned this distinction, but Toby’s Estate also operates across Australia, Asia, and the Middle East. To celebrate, the café is offering free coffee on February 27.
Sydney’s coffee culture has been rising in reputation, even surpassing Melbourne in recent rankings. However, Leslie believes this victory belongs to the entire Australian coffee scene, stating, “Our country produces the finest coffee in the world—it’s not just about Sydney vs. Melbourne.”
