In a rare and awe-inspiring moment in global diplomacy, Thailand’s King and Queen personally flew their aircraft into Bhutan, landing at the notoriously difficult Paro International Airport. This exceptional arrival defied traditional norms of state visits, where leaders are typically flown in by professional pilots amidst heavy protocol.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida piloted a Boeing 737-800 into Bhutan’s mountainous terrain, captivating aviation enthusiasts worldwide. The King was in command, with the Queen serving as his co-pilot. Their Majesties were warmly welcomed by Bhutan’s King and Queen upon touchdown.

This marked King Vajiralongkorn’s first international trip as Thailand’s monarch since ascending the throne in 2019. A trained military pilot, the King has experience flying advanced jets such as the F-5, F-16, and Boeing 737-400 during his service in the Royal Thai Army.

Bhutanese media highlighted the significance of the royal couple’s visit, stating they arrived on April 25, 2025, following an invitation from Bhutan’s monarch. The visit included several ceremonial and diplomatic engagements over four days.

As they departed Bhutan on April 29, King Vajiralongkorn once again took the controls of the aircraft, while Bhutanese royals bid them farewell with traditional honours. The event left a lasting impression, adding a unique and personal touch to high-level diplomacy.

The King and Queen’s remarkable flight showcased not only their aviation skills but also the strength of ties between Thailand and Bhutan.
