A tourist was injured after being attacked by a snow leopard in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, prompting authorities to issue fresh warnings on maintaining distance from wild animals.
Incident in Koktokay town
The encounter took place on Friday in Koktokay town, a popular skiing destination in Xinjiang. According to the local Forestry and Grassland Bureau, the tourist spotted the snow leopard while returning to their hotel after skiing.
Instead of remaining inside the vehicle, the tourist reportedly stepped out and approached the animal to take photographs, which led to the attack.
Videos capture tense moments
Videos circulating on social media show the tourist lying motionless in the snow as the snow leopard sits nearby. In another clip, bystanders can be heard asking if the animal had left before helping the injured person to their feet and moving them to safety. The tourist is seen holding their face beneath a ski helmet.
Other videos show the snow leopard calmly walking through snow-covered terrain dotted with rocks and trees.
Tourist stable, patrols increased
As reported by CNN, the injured tourist was rushed to hospital and is now in stable condition, officials said. Following the incident, authorities have increased patrols in the area and stepped up public awareness efforts to prevent similar encounters.
Authorities urge caution
Officials have urged tourists and local residents to strictly follow wildlife safety guidelines. In an online advisory, the forestry bureau said people should maintain a safe distance from wild animals and immediately report sightings to police or forest authorities to ensure personal safety.
The incident has renewed concerns over human-wildlife interactions in high-altitude tourist regions where rare predators like snow leopards are known to roam.
