Tragic School Fire in Nigeria Claims Lives of 17 Children, Investigation Underway
At least 17 children lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out at an Islamic school in northwestern Nigeria on Wednesday. The blaze occurred in the Kaura Namoda district of Zamfara state, where approximately 100 children were present. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that 17 children were critically injured and are being treated at various hospitals.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze may have been triggered by a stockpile of sticks, known locally as “kara,” used for oral hygiene. These sticks were reportedly gathered near the school, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
In the wake of the tragedy, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and stressed the importance of ensuring children’s safety in schools. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of educational institutions in the country, with past fires attributed to inadequate enforcement of safety regulations under Nigeria’s Safe School Initiative, established in 2014.
School fires are relatively rare in Nigeria, but there have been past incidents, including a recent explosion at a school near Abuja, which killed two people. Following the latest disaster, President Tinubu directed regulatory authorities to ensure schools comply with safety standards to prevent future tragedies.
