Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned that the ongoing ceasefire with Iran could be terminated if a broader agreement to end hostilities is not reached by Wednesday, raising the possibility of renewed military escalation in the Gulf region.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington from Phoenix, Arizona, Trump expressed uncertainty about extending the truce.
“Maybe I won’t extend it, but the blockade is going to remain… unfortunately we have to start dropping bombs again,” he said, signalling a hardening stance amid stalled negotiations.
Talks stall despite backchannel efforts
The warning comes as diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran remain deadlocked. A recent round of indirect talks held in Pakistan failed to yield a breakthrough, despite earlier optimism generated by backchannel communications.
Key sticking points in negotiations include sanctions relief, nuclear commitments and maritime security concerns. Both sides have publicly indicated willingness to reach a deal, but differences remain unresolved.
Tensions rise over Strait of Hormuz
The situation has been further complicated by tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass.
While the US has maintained that the waterway remains open and secure, Iranian officials have warned that continued pressure and restrictions could lead to limited access, raising alarms in global markets.
US naval blockade adds pressure
The United States has enforced a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports since mid-April, aiming to curb maritime activities linked to Tehran. American authorities have stated that vessels attempting to enter or exit Iranian ports have been turned back under the enforcement regime.
Iran, however, has strongly criticised the blockade, calling it illegal and provocative. Officials in Tehran argue that such actions could escalate tensions further and disrupt regional stability.
Global markets on edge
The uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire and ongoing standoff has created cautious sentiment in global energy markets. Analysts warn that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact global oil supply, potentially leading to price volatility.
Markets are closely monitoring developments, as prolonged tensions could tighten supply chains and delay a return to normal shipping operations in the region.
Diplomatic window narrowing
Trump’s latest remarks highlight the widening gap between the two sides, even as diplomatic channels remain open. The approaching Wednesday deadline is being viewed as a critical moment that could determine whether tensions ease or escalate.
Conclusion
With the ceasefire hanging in the balance, the coming days will be crucial for US-Iran relations. Failure to reach an agreement could lead to renewed conflict, further destabilising the Gulf region and impacting global energy security.
