Trump’s outfit at Pope Francis’ funeral sparks debate
As world leaders gathered to honor Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica, US President Donald Trump’s choice of attire became a notable point of controversy. Breaking from Vatican tradition, Trump arrived in a dark blue suit, light blue tie, and his trademark American flag lapel pin. The Vatican’s dress code, as outlined in official manuals, specifies that men should wear dark suits with black ties and lapel buttons, while women are expected to don long black dresses with matching veils and gloves.
First Lady Melania Trump adhered to the dress code, wearing a long black outfit with a veil. Other dignitaries, including former US President Joe Biden and UK’s Prince William, wore dark suits, though Biden’s blue suit was a shade more subdued than Trump’s. Biden was also seen taking a selfie with Uganda’s deputy speaker. Prince William represented King Charles III, who remained in the UK for health reasons.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky opted for an all-black outfit, forgoing a tie. His attire had already sparked criticism earlier in February during a White House visit. Despite the varying interpretations of the dress code, analysts and commentators were quick to react, with some criticizing Trump for his choice of blue over black. However, political defenders argued that Trump’s suit was still within acceptable limits and praised his appearance.
Pope Francis was buried at St. Mary Major Basilica, a location of personal significance to him, after a funeral attended by over 250,000 mourners.
