London: Bethan Simpson who was 20-weeks pregnant in early December 2018, had her baby diagnosed with ‘Spina Bifida.’

With three options given by the doctors, continue the pregnancy as it is, terminate the pregnancy or undergo a fetal surgery, Bethan chose the third option which turned out to be a successful one.

Her unborn baby was removed from her womb for the fetal surgery and then put back. The surgery was carried out at the University College London Hospital (UCLH) on January 8. Reportedly, the surgery was done to repair the baby’s spine and it has now increased the baby’s chances of walking after birth.

Simpson is only the fourth woman in the country to undergo such a procedure.

Infants with ‘Spinal Bifida’ are often unable to walk and require multiple operations by the time they are adults. The surgery comes with a lot of risks as the baby must be completely removed from the mother’s womb.

The 26-year-old shared details about her complication in a Facebook post with multiple pictures which has now gone viral on social media.

“We were a success. Her lesion was small, and she smashed surgery like you wouldn’t believe. I’m fragile and sore but as long as she is doing fine, that’s all we care about,” Simpson wrote on Facebook.

“I feel our baby kick me day in and day out. That’s never changed. She’s extra special. She’s part of history and our daughter has shown just how much she deserves this life,” she added.
