Moscow: Dramatic footage shared online has captured the aftermath of a major Ukrainian drone strike targeting an oil refinery near Moscow, with videos showing explosions, raging fires and thick black smoke rising above the facility. The attack marks one of the most significant long-range operations conducted by Ukraine against Russian energy infrastructure in recent months.
Videos circulating on social media and shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy show multiple angles of the strike, highlighting the scale of the damage inflicted on the refinery complex. The attack comes amid escalating drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides increasingly targeting strategic infrastructure far from the battlefield.
The latest strike also coincides with continued missile and drone attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities, underscoring the growing intensity of the conflict more than four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Video captures explosions and refinery fire
The footage begins with thick black smoke billowing into the sky above the refinery, visible from several kilometres away.
One video, reportedly filmed from a moving vehicle approaching the facility, shows enormous smoke plumes rising over the industrial complex. As the camera moves closer, multiple sections of the refinery appear engulfed in flames.
Another clip, recorded from an elevated vantage point, appears to capture the moment a large storage tank is struck. The impact sends the tank’s lid flying into the air while smoke and debris erupt from the structure.
Additional footage shows fires burning across different sections of the facility, with emergency responders not immediately visible in the recordings.
According to reports, the same refinery had also been targeted earlier this week, suggesting a sustained effort to disrupt operations at the site.
Russian officials describe attack as major assault
Russian authorities characterised the operation as one of the largest drone attacks directed at Moscow in recent years.
Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian air defence systems intercepted a significant number of incoming drones. However, some unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly succeeded in reaching the refinery and other targets.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said that more than 500 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across the country overnight. Officials claimed that nearly 200 of those drones were heading towards Moscow and surrounding regions.
The scale of the attack prompted temporary restrictions at airports in the Russian capital as authorities worked to manage potential security risks.
Damage reported in Moscow region
Russian officials reported that debris from intercepted drones caused damage to several residential and commercial properties in and around Moscow.
While authorities have not provided a comprehensive assessment of the refinery damage, videos suggest that at least part of the facility suffered a direct impact.
The refinery is considered an important component of Russia’s energy infrastructure, making it a strategic target for Ukrainian operations aimed at disrupting fuel production and logistics.
Neither side’s claims regarding the extent of the damage could be independently verified immediately.
Zelenskyy calls operation a justified response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strike as a direct response to ongoing Russian attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilian communities.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Zelenskyy said the operation was coordinated by Ukraine’s security and defence agencies.
He described the attack as a justified response to Russian military actions and said it represented another effort to target facilities that support Russia’s war operations.
Zelenskyy also stated that Ukrainian forces conducted strikes against additional facilities in the Rostov region and in Russian-occupied territories.
According to the Ukrainian president, recent long-range operations have demonstrated increasing precision and effectiveness, while he reiterated calls for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
Drone warfare reshaping the conflict
The latest attack highlights the growing role of long-range drone operations in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Since the conflict began, both countries have significantly expanded their use of drones for reconnaissance, surveillance and strategic strikes. In recent years, attacks have increasingly targeted energy infrastructure, military facilities and logistics hubs located deep within each side’s territory.
Ukraine has repeatedly struck oil depots, refineries and industrial sites inside Russia, arguing that such facilities contribute to Moscow’s military capabilities.
Russia, meanwhile, has continued to launch missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, prompting frequent air raid alerts across the country.
Summit backdrop adds political significance
The strike occurred just hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin was scheduled to host Southeast Asian leaders at a summit in Kazan.
The timing of the attack is likely to attract additional international attention as Russia seeks to showcase diplomatic engagement amid the ongoing conflict.
While military operations continue on multiple fronts, analysts note that the war has increasingly expanded beyond traditional battlefields. Strategic infrastructure and economic assets have become central targets as both sides attempt to weaken each other’s capabilities and influence public perception.
The latest refinery strike underscores how the conflict continues to evolve, with drone technology playing an increasingly decisive role in shaping military and political developments across the region.
