Moscow: A US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport on Tuesday, an unusual development that has fuelled speculation over a possible diplomatic or other sensitive mission.

According to flight-tracking data cited in the report, the US-registered aircraft flew to Moscow from Riga, Latvia, at around 7 am GMT. The aircraft had arrived in Riga on August 23 after travelling from the Camp Springs airbase near Washington, DC.

Kremlin says it had no information

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that there were no plans for meetings with representatives of the US administration in Moscow during the week.

The statement added to the mystery surrounding the aircraft’s arrival, as no official explanation for the flight was immediately provided.

The aircraft had departed Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday shortly before 5 pm ET. The base is a key facility used by the US President and senior American officials for official travel.

Diplomatic mission among possibilities

The C-17 Globemaster III is designed to transport troops, equipment and other heavy cargo over long distances. Its unexpected appearance in Moscow has therefore prompted speculation about its purpose.

One possibility raised in reports is that the aircraft could be connected to a diplomatic initiative or a prisoner exchange. The speculation comes after the release of former US Marine Robert Gilman earlier in August and previous prisoner exchanges between Russia and the United States.

The last known US-registered flight travelling directly from Europe to Russia was in January, when US special envoys Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine conflict.

Mystery surrounds the flight

Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations remain deadlocked, but the unusual military flight has revived questions about whether a separate diplomatic channel could be operating behind the scenes.

For now, neither Washington nor Moscow has publicly confirmed the purpose of the C-17’s visit. Until an official explanation emerges, the aircraft’s arrival remains an unusual and closely watched development in US-Russia relations.
