Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the United States and several allied nations have approached Ukraine for assistance in countering Iranian-made drones amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
In his nightly address, the Ukrainian President said Kyiv’s battlefield experience against Iranian-designed Shahed drones has made the country a valuable partner for defence strategies.
“Partners are turning to us, to Ukraine, asking for help in defending against Shahed drones, with expertise and real operational experience,” Zelensky said.
US reportedly seeks Ukrainian expertise
According to reports, the request also came from the administration of Donald Trump, as Washington and its allies deal with drone threats linked to the expanding conflict in West Asia.
Ukraine has been battling such drones extensively since the start of the war with Russia in 2022, gaining operational expertise in detecting and intercepting them.
However, the development has raised concerns among some European officials that diverting resources to support US operations against Iran could weaken Ukraine’s own air defence systems.
Concerns over Ukraine’s air defence capacity
Diplomatic sources in Europe reportedly warned that Ukraine’s already strained missile defence capacity could face further pressure if resources are redirected.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has now entered its fourth year, stretching the country’s military capabilities and increasing dependence on Western military aid.
Analysts believe that Ukraine sharing operational expertise on Iranian drones could become a critical factor in shaping the defence strategies of the US and its allies.
Growing geopolitical tensions
The request also highlights the widening impact of the Iran conflict, which has drawn in several global powers and heightened fears of broader regional escalation.
At the same time, tensions between Washington and Kyiv have surfaced in recent months, with disagreements over military strategy and negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
Despite these differences, Ukraine’s experience in countering drone warfare is now being viewed as an important resource for allied nations confronting similar threats.
