Preston Martin, a surfboard maker, assumed his beloved retro 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 van, parked in a Malibu neighborhood hit by the devastating Palisades fire, was lost to the flames. Astonishingly, the vibrant blue van emerged unscathed, standing as a bright beacon amidst charred ruins—a moment captured in a viral Associated Press photo.

Dubbed Azul by its new owner, Megan Krystle Weinraub, the van miraculously endured where homes and cars perished. Weinraub, who fled with her dog Bodi as the fire erupted, received a photo of Azul days later and was overwhelmed. “I screamed,” she said.

The van’s journey began during Martin’s college days, where he converted it into his home to save on rent. Despite skepticism from his mother, she later embraced the project, even sewing curtains for the windows. Last summer, Martin sold the van to Weinraub, his business partner in crafting surf and skateboards.

While Weinraub hasn’t retrieved Azul due to restricted access, the van’s survival has sparked widespread joy. “It’s become this beacon of hope,” Martin remarked. Their story has resonated as a rare uplifting moment in the aftermath of destruction, celebrating resilience and unexpected miracles.
