In a heroic act of kindness, Chris MacRitchie from Vermont plunged into the freezing Winooski River on Friday to save a dog struggling in the icy waters. While visiting a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru with his family in Berlin, MacRitchie noticed the distressed dog and immediately sprang into action. He climbed down the embankment and waded into the river, with his son recording the rescue.
“It was one of those moments where you have to make a decision,” said MacRitchie. “I have two dogs myself, and I’d hope someone would do the same for them.” Despite the freezing temperatures, MacRitchie pressed on, concerned only with the river’s depth. Once he found the water waist-high, he felt reassured that he could manage the rescue.
MacRitchie successfully pulled the dog from the water, and his wife wrapped the shivering animal in a sweatshirt. The dog’s owner, Morgan Cerasoli, who had been searching for her 7-year-old rescue mutt, Arizona, since Thursday, was overcome with emotion. “I started crying, and I told him, ‘Oh, my God, I love you,’” she said.
Now safely back with her beloved dog, Cerasoli called MacRitchie’s actions “brave, selfless, and commendable,” highlighting the impact of his compassion.
