A video circulating on social media, allegedly showing Holi celebrations in China, has sparked confusion among viewers. The footage, which shows a line of firecrackers lighting up the streets and bursting into colourful displays, led many to believe it depicted Indians celebrating Holi in China, with some even suggesting it was from Uttar Pradesh or Punjab.
However, India Today’s Fact Check team investigated the video and uncovered the truth: the video actually predates Holi and is from the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Our Investigation: Through reverse image searches, we traced the video to an Instagram post from February 16, which described the video as showing celebrations on the sixteenth day of the Chinese New Year. Since Holi is celebrated on March 14 this year, it is clear that the video is not related to the festival of colours.
Further examination revealed that the fireworks in the video were part of the Chaozhou Spring Festival celebrations in Guangdong Province, China. Similar videos from YouTube, dated February 14, showed the same fireworks from a different angle, with buildings clearly displaying Mandarin text.
Conclusion: The video shows the grand fireworks display of the Chinese New Year, which is part of a 15-day celebration spanning from January 29 to February 12, 2025. It is unrelated to Holi celebrations and reflects the vibrant traditions of the Spring Festival in China.
