A woman in her 40s died at the scene of a road accident after a car overturned on the M11 motorway in Essex during the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred at around 12.50 am on the southbound carriageway of the M11, between Junction 7 near Harlow and Junction 6 for the M25. According to Essex Police, a red Audi A3 left the road and overturned, coming to rest on its roof beside the carriageway.

Two others seriously injured

Emergency services attended the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. Police confirmed that her family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.

A man and another woman who were also in the vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries, where they continue to receive treatment.

Major traffic disruption overnight

The collision led to the temporary closure of the southbound stretch of the motorway for several hours. National Highways warned motorists to expect delays of up to an hour, with congestion stretching nearly four miles at its peak.

Traffic was gradually restored after recovery work and safety checks were completed, and the road has since reopened fully.

Police appeal for information

Essex Police have launched a full investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the crash. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision to come forward.

Road safety experts continue to urge drivers to remain cautious during late-night travel, particularly on high-speed motorways, and to report any hazards immediately.
