Brazilia– Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, believed to be the world’s oldest living person, passed away on Wednesday at the remarkable age of 116. A devoted nun from Brazil, she credited her extraordinary lifespan to faith in God and her religious calling.

Born on June 8, 1908, Inah overcame a fragile childhood, defying early predictions about her survival. She entered religious life in 1934, becoming a member of the Congregation of Teresian Sisters. Her order in Porto Alegre expressed deep gratitude for her “dedication and devotion” throughout nearly nine decades of service.

Lucas became the world’s oldest person after the death of Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, who also reached 116, in January. Despite claiming May 27, 1908, as her birth date, official records confirmed it as June 8, 1908, according to the US Gerontological Research Group (GRG).

In her later years, Sister Inah often stated: “God is the secret of life. He is the secret of everything.” On her 110th birthday, she was honored with a special blessing from Pope Francis, who himself recently passed away at age 88.

Sister Inah was recognized as the 15th-oldest documented person in history, and the second-oldest nun ever, following Lucile Randon of France, who lived to 118.

The title of world’s oldest living person now goes to Ethel Caterham, aged 115, from Surrey, England.
