New York City witnessed a powerful display of wellness, peace, and unity as yoga mats were unrolled atop the One World Trade Center, marking the beginning of a 75-day countdown to the 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21.
Organized by the Consulate General of India in New York, the event took place on the 102nd floor of the One World Observatory — the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Despite rainy weather, participants embraced the moment, surrounded by breathtaking views of Manhattan and New Jersey.
India’s Consul General Binaya Pradhan addressed the attendees, emphasizing yoga’s role as a cultural bridge and a path toward better health and mindfulness in today’s world. The session was led by Ruchika Lal of the Art of Living Foundation, who reflected on the deep symbolism of practicing yoga at a place once marked by tragedy, now transformed into a space of healing and hope.
“This space that once witnessed terror is now a place of peace. That’s the power of yoga,” said Lal, who guided the group through breathing exercises, Yogasanas, meditation, and self-awareness techniques.
Among the attendees were Deputy Consul General Vishal Harsh, members of the Indian diaspora, yoga enthusiasts, and students. The Consulate shared the event on X, calling it a spiritually uplifting way to begin the countdown to a global celebration of wellness.
