Announcing her death, Brandon said Mackenzie passed away after being admitted to the ICU. Fighting back tears, he described her as his “best friend” and said he found comfort in knowing she was no longer in pain after years of suffering. “Selfishly, I wish she was still here with me,” he said, adding that the past two-and-a-half years had been both a blessing and heartbreak.
From medical student to social media inspiration
Mackenzie first gained widespread attention in August 2023 after revealing her cancer diagnosis on TikTok. At the time, she was just 23 and a second-year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. A former athlete from Lake Superior State University, she had sought medical advice after experiencing dizziness during a clinical rotation.
She was later diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and began documenting her treatment and setbacks online. Through her hashtag series #TakingBackWhatCancerTookFromMe, Mackenzie highlighted resilience, faith and gratitude, even during her most difficult days.
A journey marked by courage and honesty
Despite periods of remission, her cancer returned aggressively. In her final days, Mackenzie shared videos describing severe pain and loss of voice, requesting prayers from her followers. Brandon revealed that while much of her journey was public, there were many unshared moments when she fought for life in intensive care.
Outpouring of grief and tributes
Following her death, tributes poured in from fans and fellow creators, many crediting Mackenzie for giving them strength during their own struggles. Remembered for her warmth, discipline and courage, Mackenzie Paul leaves behind a legacy of hope, honesty and quiet strength.
