Indian-origin New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has courted controversy on social media after short video clips from his inaugural event went viral, with some users questioning a hand gesture he made while greeting the crowd.

The clips show the 34-year-old mayor briefly extending his right arm and waving during the ceremony. Supporters of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement interpreted the gesture as resembling a Nazi salute, a claim that has since triggered heated online debate.

Social media comparisons fuel controversy

Some users drew comparisons between Mamdani’s gesture and one made by billionaire Elon Musk during an inauguration rally for US President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025. The comparisons were widely circulated across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and other platforms.

Others on social media rejected the allegations, arguing that the clip showed a routine wave taken out of context and accused critics of deliberately misrepresenting the moment for political gain.

No official response so far

As of Thursday, Mayor Mamdani has not issued a formal response to the claims. City officials have also not commented on the controversy, which remains confined largely to social media discourse.

Political observers noted that gestures captured in isolation can often be misinterpreted, particularly in a highly polarised online environment, and urged caution against drawing extreme conclusions from brief video clips.

Focus shifts back to governance

Despite the online backlash, Mamdani’s supporters have emphasised his policy priorities and called for attention to return to governance issues facing New York City, including housing, public safety and economic recovery.

The episode highlights how viral content and partisan narratives continue to shape political discourse in the digital age, often overshadowing substantive policy discussions
