In the wake of a heart-wrenching accident that claimed the life of a 10-year-old schoolgirl, the Greater Chennai Police has enforced a strict ban on heavy vehicles, including water tankers, from entering city limits during peak hours that coincide with school timings.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when young Sowmiya, riding pillion with her mother Yamini on Paper Mills Road near Perambur, was crushed under the wheels of a water tanker. Police confirmed that the presence of the tanker during school hours led to traffic chaos, ultimately resulting in the fatal mishap.

In response, Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun issued a city-wide directive prohibiting the entry of heavy vehicles between 7 AM to 12 noon and 4 PM to 8 PM. The move specifically targets roads near schools and colleges, with officers instructed to strictly enforce the ban.

Strict action followed swiftly: Sembium traffic enforcement inspector M Sudalaimani was suspended, and disciplinary action has been initiated against Pulianthope traffic assistant commissioner Sathyamoorthy for failing to prevent the tanker’s entry.

Commissioner Arun further warned that any vehicle violating the ban would be impounded for up to 100 days. Officers neglecting the directive will face departmental disciplinary action.

The crackdown aims to protect schoolchildren and reduce risk during crucial commuting hours, ensuring roads are safer for families and young students.
