India: BYD’s luxury automotive brand Denza has officially confirmed its entry into the Indian market, marking the Chinese electric vehicle maker’s next move into the premium end of the country’s growing EV segment.

The confirmation came through a social media announcement featuring Denza’s blue-and-silver logo and an “Arriving soon” message. The brand described its India plans as the introduction of a sophisticated, high-performance EV experience, but has not yet announced an exact launch date, prices or the complete model line-up.

Denza is positioned above BYD’s existing vehicle range and is expected to target the luxury EV market, with reports indicating that its Indian products could be priced well above Rs 70 lakh. Earlier reports had suggested that BYD was preparing to introduce the D9 luxury MPV as one of the first Denza models in India.

Denza to operate as BYD’s premium brand

Denza is not a new automotive brand. It was established in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz subsequently exited the partnership completely in 2024, transferring its remaining stake to BYD. Denza is now fully owned by BYD and has expanded beyond China into markets including Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America.

The brand focuses on luxury and technology-oriented vehicles, including electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Its positioning allows BYD to compete in a higher price category while keeping its mainstream BYD products separate.

The Indian entry therefore represents more than the addition of another EV model. It gives BYD a dedicated luxury marque for customers looking for higher-end electric vehicles, premium interiors and advanced technology.

D9 MPV likely to lead India launch

The Denza D9 is widely expected to play a key role in the company’s Indian entry.

Earlier reports indicated that BYD was preparing the D9 executive MPV for India, with an expected price of around Rs 90 lakh. The model would compete in the premium MPV space against vehicles such as the MG M9 and Toyota Vellfire, while sitting below higher-priced luxury MPVs such as the Lexus LM.

The D9 is a large luxury MPV with a 2+2+3 seating configuration. Its second row features captain’s chairs with functions such as electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage.

Other premium features available in international versions include three-zone climate control, leather upholstery, ambient lighting and a premium audio system.

The India-specification vehicle could use a 103kWh battery with a front-mounted electric motor producing around 313hp and 360Nm, with an internationally claimed WLTP range of about 520km. Final specifications for India, however, have not yet been confirmed.

Z9 GT could add performance to the portfolio

The Denza Z9 GT is another model that has been linked to the company’s Indian plans.

The four-door shooting brake combines a large battery with a tri-motor electric powertrain. International specifications quoted by automotive publications include a 122.5kWh battery and a combined output of 1,156hp.

The Z9 GT is claimed to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 2.7 seconds and offers a WLTP-rated range of around 600km. It also features advanced chassis technology, including rear-wheel steering.

One of its unusual functions is a sideways movement capability commonly referred to as “crab walk”. The vehicle can also perform a 360-degree turning manoeuvre using its steering and motor-control systems.

However, while the Z9 GT is being discussed as a possible India model, BYD has not officially confirmed the Indian launch line-up.

India launch details remain under wraps

Denza’s latest announcement confirms the brand’s entry but leaves several important details unanswered.

The company has not disclosed the exact launch date, opening prices, booking schedule or complete list of models that will be sold in India. It has also not yet provided a detailed dealership rollout plan through the public announcement.

Reports, however, indicate that BYD has already been working on a separate retail network for Denza.

According to a September report, dealer groups including Landmark Group, EVM, KUN and Cargo Motors were being lined up for Denza operations in different parts of India. EVM was reported to be associated with Bengaluru and Hyderabad, while Landmark was linked with Mumbai and KUN with Chennai.

A separate Denza retail network would help distinguish the luxury brand from BYD’s existing dealerships and provide a more premium sales and customer-service environment.

Denza targets India’s luxury EV segment

The timing of Denza’s entry comes as India’s premium electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly competitive.

Luxury carmakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo already offer electric vehicles in India. Newer premium EV products from domestic and international manufacturers are also expanding consumer choice.

Denza’s strategy is different from simply competing on electric range or price. Its vehicles combine large batteries and powerful electric drivetrains with premium interiors, advanced driver-assistance systems and technology-focused features.

The company’s international portfolio also gives it flexibility to introduce different body styles, ranging from luxury MPVs to performance-oriented cars and SUVs.

Separate identity could help BYD move upmarket

BYD has already established its presence in India with electric passenger vehicles. Introducing Denza as a separate luxury brand allows the company to move further up the price ladder without changing the positioning of its existing BYD range.

This strategy is also visible in other automotive markets, where manufacturers use separate brands to address different customer segments.

For Denza, India could become an important market as demand for premium electric vehicles develops. The country’s expanding charging network, growing EV adoption and increasing interest in luxury electric mobility provide a potential market for high-end EVs.

However, the brand will also have to contend with India’s relatively small premium EV market compared with the mass-market passenger vehicle segment.

Pricing and localisation will be key factors

The expected pricing of Denza vehicles will place them firmly in the luxury segment.

Reports have indicated that Denza models could begin around the Rs 90 lakh level, while higher-performance products such as the Z9 GT could potentially move beyond the Rs 1 crore mark. These figures remain expectations rather than confirmed India prices.

The final pricing will depend on factors including import strategy, taxes, specifications and the extent of local assembly or manufacturing.

BYD’s approach to India could therefore become an important part of Denza’s positioning. The company will need to balance premium features with pricing that is competitive against established luxury brands.

India launch expected to expand BYD’s portfolio

The Denza announcement gives BYD another route into India’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.

While BYD’s existing portfolio serves customers across more accessible price segments, Denza will focus on premium vehicles with larger batteries, more powerful electric drivetrains and luxury-oriented cabins.

The D9 is expected to provide the brand with a practical entry into India’s premium MPV market, while the Z9 GT could showcase Denza’s performance and technology capabilities.

For now, the company has confirmed the brand’s arrival but has kept the exact launch schedule and model strategy under wraps.

Conclusion

BYD’s luxury brand Denza has officially confirmed its India entry with an “Arriving soon” announcement. The brand is expected to target the premium EV segment, with the D9 luxury MPV and Z9 GT among the models linked to its India plans. While launch dates, prices and final specifications are yet to be announced, Denza’s arrival will expand BYD’s presence into India’s luxury electric vehicle market.
