Honda Cars India has officially announced plans to introduce a brand-new electric vehicle (EV) tailored for the Indian market. This development was revealed by the company’s recently appointed President and CEO, Takashi Nakajima, during a casual interaction in Delhi. Contrary to earlier assumptions, the upcoming EV will not be a variant of the Honda Elevate but an entirely fresh model.

Although the company hasn’t disclosed whether the new EV will be a sedan or an SUV, industry buzz leans toward it being a compact SUV. If confirmed, it would rival the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and the soon-to-launch Maruti e-Vitara. In preparation for the EV rollout, Honda is also working on setting up its own charging infrastructure across India.

In parallel with its EV plans, Honda is doubling down on hybrids. The company aims to broaden its hybrid offerings by developing a new platform likely to feature its signature e-HEV technology. This could include a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration.

As of now, Honda retails the City, Amaze, and Elevate in India. The City is available with a hybrid variant. In April 2025, Honda sold 4,871 units, of which 3,360 were sold domestically and 1,511 exported.

Interestingly, Honda shipped over 45,000 Elevate units to Japan in the first 9 months of FY 2024-25, where it’s branded as the WR-V — a model discontinued in India in 2023 but thriving internationally.
