New Delhi: India’s electric two-wheeler market has crossed a major milestone, with more than 13.6 lakh electric scooters and motorcycles sold in the first eight months of 2026. Sales between January and August reached 13,61,170 units, marking a 60 per cent increase over the 8,51,787 units recorded during the same period last year.

The sharp growth highlights the increasing adoption of electric mobility in India, with established manufacturers such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp’s Vida brand accounting for a substantial share of the market.

Electric two-wheeler sales rise 60 per cent

According to Vahan-based industry data cited by NDTV, India recorded 13,61,170 electric two-wheeler sales from January to August 2026. This compares with 8,51,787 units sold during the corresponding period in 2025.

The increase represents a 60 per cent year-on-year growth, underlining the strong momentum in the electric two-wheeler segment.

The market has also maintained high monthly volumes. In August alone, manufacturers sold 1,82,936 electric two-wheelers, compared with 1,09,673 units in August 2025. That translates into a 67 per cent year-on-year increase.

Sales had already crossed the 2 lakh-unit mark in both June and July, indicating that demand has remained strong through the middle of the year.

TVS Motor remains the market leader

TVS Motor Company has retained the top position in India’s electric two-wheeler market during the first eight months of 2026.

The company sold 3,56,579 electric two-wheelers between January and August, giving it a 26 per cent market share. Its sales grew 77 per cent compared with the same period last year.

The TVS iQube family has been a major contributor to the company’s electric two-wheeler volumes. According to Autocar India, TVS had already exceeded its entire 2025 electric two-wheeler sales of 3,15,082 units by more than 41,000 units by the end of August.

The company also recorded its strongest monthly performance in July, when it sold 55,823 electric two-wheelers.

Bajaj Auto closes in on TVS

Bajaj Auto has secured the second position, with 3,05,226 electric two-wheelers sold during January-August 2026.

The company recorded 69 per cent year-on-year growth and held a 22 per cent share of the market. Its market share has increased from 21 per cent during the corresponding period last year.

The Chetak electric scooter range has been the main driver behind Bajaj’s growing EV volumes. The company has also crossed the 3 lakh-unit annual sales mark, becoming the second manufacturer after TVS to achieve that milestone in a calendar year.

Bajaj’s strongest month so far was March, when it recorded 47,753 electric two-wheeler sales.

Ather strengthens its position

Bengaluru-based Ather Energy has also recorded strong growth in 2026.

The company sold 2,29,099 electric two-wheelers between January and August, representing an 83 per cent increase over the same period last year. Ather’s market share has risen to 17 per cent from 15 per cent a year earlier.

The Rizta has remained an important volume driver for Ather, alongside its 450 range.

Ather has also expanded its product portfolio during the year. The company recently launched the Konarc electric scooter, with prices starting at Rs 99,999, adding another product to its growing line-up.

In August alone, Ather sold 28,708 electric two-wheelers, up 49 per cent compared with August 2025.

Vida records fastest growth among top four

Hero MotoCorp’s Vida brand has posted the fastest year-on-year growth among the four leading manufacturers.

Vida sold 1,48,069 electric two-wheelers between January and August, representing a 151 per cent increase over the same period last year. Its market share rose from 7 per cent to 11 per cent.

The Vida VX2 Go and VX2 Plus have been important contributors to the brand’s sales, with the Battery-as-a-Service pricing option helping make the products more accessible to customers.

July was Vida’s strongest month so far, with 22,989 units sold. In August, the brand recorded 18,978 units, an increase of 38 per cent compared with the same month last year.

Four brands control 76 per cent of the market

TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Vida together sold 10,38,973 electric two-wheelers during the first eight months of 2026.

That means the four manufacturers accounted for approximately 76 per cent of India’s total electric two-wheeler market during the period.

The combined performance is particularly significant because these four brands have already surpassed their combined full-year 2025 sales. They sold 9,22,824 electric two-wheelers during the whole of 2025, while their January-August 2026 tally has already crossed 10.38 lakh units.

This leaves a sizeable share of the market for other manufacturers, but the dominance of the leading four indicates increasing competition among established two-wheeler companies.

India could cross 20 lakh electric two-wheelers

With four months still remaining in 2026, the broader electric two-wheeler market is on course for another strong year.

Autocar India reported that the segment had already reached around 13.6 lakh units by the end of August and remained on course to cross the 20 lakh-unit annual milestone for the first time.

The growth is being supported by several factors, including increasing consumer awareness, a wider range of electric scooters, improvements in battery technology and the expansion of charging infrastructure.

Rising fuel costs can also make electric two-wheelers more attractive for customers looking at the overall running cost of daily commuting.

Festive season could provide another boost

The coming months could prove important for electric two-wheeler manufacturers as the Indian festive season traditionally brings stronger vehicle demand.

Manufacturers are expected to use new product launches, financing schemes and expanded retail networks to attract customers. With TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Vida already reporting strong growth, competition is likely to intensify as companies attempt to capture more market share.

The figures also show that electric two-wheelers are moving beyond being a niche category in India. While petrol-powered scooters and motorcycles continue to account for the majority of the overall two-wheeler market, EVs are steadily increasing their presence.

If the current sales momentum continues through the final four months of 2026, India’s electric two-wheeler industry could set a new annual sales record and move closer to mainstream adoption.
