New Delhi: Land Rover has opened pre-launch bookings in India for the Range Rover Electric, marking the arrival of the luxury SUV maker’s first fully electric Range Rover. The electric SUV will be brought to India as a full import, while its Indian price is yet to be announced.
Bookings are currently open for multiple variants, including the standard-wheelbase Autobiography and First Edition, along with the long-wheelbase SV, SV Ultra and SV Black models. The Range Rover Electric combines the brand’s familiar luxury and off-road positioning with an all-electric powertrain.
118.5 kWh battery and 542 hp power
The Range Rover Electric gets a 118.5 kWh usable lithium-ion battery pack with 344 prismatic cells and an 800V electrical architecture.
Power comes from twin permanent-magnet electric motors that together produce 542 hp and 850 Nm of torque. Land Rover claims a WLTP range of up to 600 km on a full charge.
The electric SUV is positioned as a high-performance luxury EV while retaining the characteristics traditionally associated with the Range Rover name.
The large battery and dual-motor setup are aimed at providing both strong performance and the ability to tackle different types of terrain.
350 kW fast charging support
The Range Rover Electric supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW.
According to Land Rover, the SUV can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes when connected to a compatible rapid charger.
The company also claims that a 10-minute charging session can add up to 125 miles of driving range when charging at the vehicle’s peak rate, based on EPA-estimated figures.
The charging capability is particularly significant for a large luxury electric SUV, where battery capacity and charging speed are important considerations for long-distance travel.
Built for off-road capability
Despite being fully electric, the Range Rover Electric retains the brand’s focus on all-terrain capability.
One of its key technologies is a new traction management system that Land Rover says can respond in as little as 50 milliseconds. The system is designed to optimise traction across different surfaces while maintaining the SUV’s off-road abilities.
The electric Range Rover can also reportedly wade through water up to 35 inches deep, matching the brand’s traditional all-terrain credentials.
Land Rover says the SUV can tackle gradients of up to 45 degrees. Its lower centre of gravity, resulting from the battery placement, is also expected to contribute to handling and stability.
Air suspension and single-pedal driving
The Range Rover Electric gets a twin-chamber air suspension system designed to balance ride comfort and handling.
The SUV also features a single-pedal driving mode. This allows the driver to accelerate and decelerate using the accelerator pedal while also supporting energy recuperation.
The combination of electric power delivery, regenerative braking and air suspension is intended to provide a different driving experience from conventional petrol or diesel Range Rover models.
Extensive development programme
Land Rover says the electric Range Rover has undergone an extensive development programme before entering production.
According to the company, the vehicle covered a cumulative testing distance equivalent to travelling around the globe 38 times during physical testing.
Engineers also completed more than 250,000 hours of virtual validation, which Land Rover describes as the highest level of virtual testing for a Range Rover to date.
The testing programme has been designed to ensure that the electric model can meet the same expectations for durability, comfort and off-road performance associated with the Range Rover brand.
India bookings open, price yet to be announced
The Range Rover Electric will be sold in India as a completely built unit (CBU). Pre-launch bookings are now open, but Land Rover has not announced the India price yet.
In the UK, the electric SUV starts at £154,070, including on-the-road costs. Its pricing in India is expected to be significantly higher after accounting for import duties and other costs, although the company has not officially confirmed an India figure.
Once launched, the Range Rover Electric will compete in the premium electric SUV space. One of its key rivals in India is expected to be the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology.
The opening of bookings gives Indian luxury EV buyers an opportunity to register their interest in the new model ahead of its official price announcement.
Range Rover enters the electric era
The Range Rover Electric represents an important step in Land Rover’s electrification strategy. Rather than creating a separate electric model with a new identity, the company has retained the Range Rover name, design philosophy and off-road focus while replacing the conventional powertrain with electric motors.
With a 118.5 kWh battery, 542 hp, 850 Nm of torque, a claimed 600 km WLTP range and 350 kW charging capability, the SUV combines high-end luxury with substantial electric performance.
For Indian buyers, the key details still to be confirmed are the final price and launch timeline. With bookings already open, more information is expected as Land Rover prepares to bring its first fully electric Range Rover to the Indian market.
