New Delhi: JSW MG Motor India has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme to its luxury electric vehicles, the MG Cyberster and MG M9, allowing buyers to reduce the upfront purchase price by opting to rent the battery at a charge of ₹8 per kilometre.
Under the new ownership programme, the MG Cyberster is available at an introductory BaaS price of ₹72.49 lakh, while the MG M9 is priced at ₹69.99 lakh, excluding the per-kilometre battery rental. The prices are ex-showroom.
The BaaS programme has already been introduced across other MG electric vehicles in India and now extends the battery-rental ownership model to the brand’s premium MG Select portfolio.
MG Cyberster BaaS price
The MG Cyberster is priced at ₹72.49 lakh with BaaS, compared with an ex-showroom price of around ₹82.50 lakh without the programme.
This represents an upfront price difference of approximately ₹10.01 lakh, although the saving does not account for the ₹8 per km battery rental that customers pay under the BaaS arrangement.
The Cyberster is a two-seat electric roadster and is sold through MG Select, the company’s dedicated luxury retail channel.
It uses a 77kWh battery pack and has a claimed driving range of around 580 km. The electric sports car gets a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 510 hp and 725 Nm.
MG claims the Cyberster can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in approximately 3.2 seconds.
The roadster also features electrically operated scissor doors and a low-slung two-seat cockpit, giving it a distinct sports-car layout.
MG M9 BaaS price
The MG M9 is available under the BaaS programme at ₹69.99 lakh, compared with its regular ex-showroom price of around ₹79.95 lakh.
The upfront difference works out to approximately ₹9.96 lakh, before accounting for the ₹8 per km battery rental.
The M9 is a luxury electric MPV and is positioned differently from the two-seat Cyberster. It uses a 90kWh battery pack and has a claimed range of around 548 km.
Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor producing 245 hp and 350 Nm.
What is Battery-as-a-Service?
Under the BaaS model, the price of the vehicle and the cost of the battery are separated.
Instead of paying the full vehicle price that includes the battery, customers pay a lower upfront price for the vehicle and subsequently pay a battery rental charge based on the distance travelled.
For the Cyberster and M9, the battery rental is ₹8 per kilometre.
For example, at 1,000 km of driving in a month, the battery rental component would amount to ₹8,000 for that month, assuming the charge is calculated solely on the stated per-kilometre basis. The actual ownership cost would also include other expenses such as charging, insurance, maintenance and applicable taxes.
The BaaS model therefore changes the payment structure rather than eliminating the cost associated with the battery.
No mechanical changes under BaaS
The BaaS versions of the Cyberster and M9 do not receive mechanical changes compared with their standard versions.
The Cyberster continues with its dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, 77kWh battery and claimed 580 km range, while the M9 retains its 90kWh battery, front-mounted motor and claimed 548 km range.
The programme is primarily an alternative ownership structure for customers who prefer a lower initial purchase price combined with a usage-based battery rental.
Cyberster features and performance
The MG Cyberster is one of the most performance-focused models in the MG Select portfolio.
Its dual electric motors generate 510 hp and 725 Nm, with power sent to all four wheels. The combination allows the electric roadster to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in approximately 3.2 seconds.
Its design includes electric scissor doors, a two-seat cabin and a low-slung roadster profile.
The 77kWh battery gives the model a claimed range of around 580 km, although real-world range can vary depending on driving conditions, speed, weather, traffic and usage of climate-control systems.
MG M9 focuses on luxury and comfort
The MG M9 takes a different approach, focusing on luxury, space and passenger comfort.
Its second-row Presidential Seats feature 16-way adjustment along with massage, ventilation and heating functions.
The MPV also gets a dual sunroof, ambient lighting and a 13-speaker audio system.
Safety and driver-assistance equipment includes Level 2 ADAS, a driver-monitoring system and seven airbags, according to MG’s product information. Automotive reports also note that the M9 carries five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP.
MG Select expands luxury EV network
The Cyberster and M9 are retailed through MG Select, JSW MG Motor India’s luxury retail channel.
The company currently operates 15 Experience Centres across 14 cities, according to the latest announcement.
MG Select is designed as a dedicated retail and ownership channel for the brand’s premium electric models, offering the Cyberster and M9 alongside associated luxury ownership services.
In August, MG Select also introduced Couture Editions of the M9 and Cyberster in collaboration with designer Gaurav Gupta. The M9 Couture Edition was priced at ₹84.94 lakh, while the Cyberster Couture Edition was priced at ₹87.49 lakh.
MG’s BaaS strategy expands
The introduction of BaaS for the Cyberster and M9 follows MG’s broader push towards battery-rental ownership models in India.
The company has previously introduced BaaS on other electric vehicles, allowing customers to lower the initial purchase price while paying a separate per-kilometre battery rental.
The Hector Tomahawk EV, for example, was launched with BaaS pricing starting at ₹13.99 lakh and a battery rental charge of ₹4.9 per kilometre.
With the Cyberster and M9 now included, the model has been extended to MG’s luxury EV range.
MG has sold over 1.5 lakh EVs in India
JSW MG Motor India said it has sold more than 1.5 lakh electric vehicles in India since entering the EV market.
The company said the MG Windsor is currently its highest-selling electric vehicle in the country and that it remains focused on expanding its EV portfolio and introducing different ownership models.
The new BaaS programme gives buyers of the Cyberster and M9 another payment structure, with the upfront vehicle price reduced but a separate battery rental charge applied according to kilometres driven.
