New Delhi: Volkswagen has unveiled the all-electric ID. Tiguan, a new electric SUV that will offer a claimed driving range of up to 600 km on a single charge. The model is scheduled to arrive in global markets in early 2027 and will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 in the German carmaker’s electric vehicle line-up.
The new SUV marks the first time Volkswagen has introduced an all-electric vehicle under the Tiguan nameplate. It will be sold alongside the conventional Tiguan, which continues to be offered with internal combustion engine options in relevant markets.
Volkswagen ID. Tiguan: Battery, power and range
The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will be available with two battery pack options: 58 kWh and 77 kWh. The SUV will offer three powertrain configurations, with outputs ranging from 190 hp to 299 hp.
The entry-level version will feature a 58 kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor producing 190 hp. The larger 77 kWh battery will be offered with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
The rear-wheel-drive version with the larger battery will produce 286 hp, while the top-spec all-wheel-drive variant will deliver 299 hp.
Volkswagen claims a maximum WLTP driving range of up to 600 km. The actual range will depend on the selected powertrain, driving conditions and other factors.
The electric SUV will also support towing, with the maximum capacity reaching up to two tonnes on eligible versions. These specifications position the ID. Tiguan as a practical electric vehicle for both everyday commuting and longer journeys.
Exterior design gets a fresh look
The ID. Tiguan introduces Volkswagen’s ‘Pure Positive’ design language, combining modern electric vehicle styling with a more conventional SUV silhouette.
The exterior features a redesigned front section, distinctive lighting elements and a more upright appearance. The side profile includes pull-type door handles, aerodynamic alloy wheels and black cladding around the wheel arches.
At the rear, the SUV gets connected LED tail-lamps and an illuminated Volkswagen badge. The overall design aims to give the electric model a stronger SUV identity while distinguishing it from the earlier ID.4 and ID.5.
The new styling reflects Volkswagen’s approach of making its electric vehicles visually familiar to buyers who prefer traditional SUV proportions.
Interior features and technology
The cabin receives a substantial technology upgrade, with a redesigned dashboard and a new digital display layout.
The ID. Tiguan features a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch central infotainment touchscreen. An optional passenger display is also available, adding another screen to the front cabin.
Volkswagen has introduced a new retro-inspired display mode, allowing drivers to use instrument graphics inspired by earlier Volkswagen models. The cabin also features updated materials and a revised layout intended to improve the overall user experience.
Comfort features include electrically adjustable front seats with massage and ventilation functions, depending on the variant and equipment package. A panoramic sunroof and a Harman Kardon sound system are also available as optional equipment.
The SUV supports one-pedal driving, allowing drivers to accelerate and slow down using the accelerator pedal through regenerative braking. Volkswagen’s Connected Travel Assist system also offers driver assistance, including support for motorway lane changes and traffic-light recognition in supported conditions.
Boot space and everyday practicality
Volkswagen has designed the ID. Tiguan to offer practical storage for families and travellers. The SUV provides up to 534 litres of rear luggage capacity and an additional 32-litre front storage compartment, commonly known as a frunk.
The model is designed to accommodate five occupants. Its combination of rear luggage space, front storage and towing capability is intended to make it suitable for daily use as well as longer trips.
The final specifications and equipment availability may vary between versions and markets.
Volkswagen ID. Tiguan launch and expected price
Volkswagen plans to launch the ID. Tiguan in early 2027, initially targeting European markets. According to reports, pre-sales in Germany and selected European markets are scheduled to begin on October 13, 2026, with prices starting at €42,695, equivalent to approximately Rs 47 lakh before any market-specific taxes and costs.
The company has not announced an India launch date or pricing for the electric SUV. Its availability in India therefore remains unconfirmed.
The ID. Tiguan will join Volkswagen’s expanding electric vehicle portfolio as the company transitions its ID.4 and ID.5 successors to the new model. With multiple battery and drivetrain options, a claimed range of up to 600 km and a more conventional SUV design, the new model is aimed at buyers looking for a spacious electric vehicle with long-distance capability.
For Indian buyers, further details about a possible launch, specifications and pricing will depend on future announcements from Volkswagen.
