A disturbing case of domestic violence has been reported from Karnataka’s Bagalkot district, where a 31-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife and forcibly shaving her head, police said.

The accused has been identified as Umesh Kottalagi, a resident of the district. According to police, he had been subjecting his wife to repeated harassment, accusing her of having an extramarital relationship. The harassment reportedly continued over a period of time despite repeated interventions by the woman’s parents and other family members.

Argument escalates into violence

The incident occurred late on January 31, when an argument broke out between the couple at their residence. Police said the accused became enraged after his wife allegedly delayed opening the door when he returned home.

In a fit of anger, Umesh allegedly locked the house from inside, assaulted his wife physically and forcibly shaved her head using an electric trimmer. Investigators said the act was carried out to humiliate and punish her.

Suspicion over visitor cited

Police said the husband’s suspicion was reportedly triggered by the visit of another man to the house earlier, who had come to collect food. The accused allegedly interpreted this as suspicious behaviour and used it to justify his continued harassment.

The woman later approached the authorities, following which a complaint was registered at Savalagi Police Station.

Case registered, probe underway

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of law dealing with assault and cruelty against a woman. Umesh Kottalagi was subsequently arrested and further investigation is underway.

Police officials said such acts of domestic violence and public humiliation would be dealt with strictly under the law. They also urged victims of domestic abuse to come forward and seek legal and institutional support.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents and women’s rights advocates, who have once again highlighted the need for stronger awareness and intervention mechanisms to prevent domestic violence and protect women’s dignity.
