In a swift action by the Karnataka Police, a one-day-old male baby was reunited with his mother at the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Kalaburagi, after three women involved in child lifting were arrested.
The accused, identified as Umera, Nasreen, and Fathima, had posed as nurses and abducted the baby from his mother on Tuesday under the pretext of conducting a blood test. The women sold the child for Rs 50,000 to a woman named Khairunnisa.
The incident, which caused panic due to the women dressing as hospital staff, was taken seriously by the authorities. State Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharan Prakash Patil visited the hospital and instructed police to take immediate action.
Following a tip-off, police tracked down the baby to Khairunnisa’s house in Kalaburagi’s MSK Mill Layout and rescued him. However, Khairunnisa managed to escape, and police have launched a manhunt for her.
Kasturi, the baby’s mother, who hails from Ravura village in Chittapur taluk, expressed immense relief and gratitude after being reunited with her child. The police team, led by ACP Bhootegowda, Circle Inspectors Somaling Kiradalli and Raghavendra Bhajanthri, received praise from Police Commissioner Sharanappa S. D. for their efficient work.
The quick recovery of the child and the successful operation were applauded by the parents and the local community.
