The Syndicate of Rani Channamma University–Belagavi (RCUB) has decided to send Prof. K.L.N. Murthy, a History professor and research guide accused of sexual harassment, on compulsory retirement. The decision was taken during a special Syndicate meeting held on Thursday, Vice Chancellor Prof. C.M. Thyagaraja confirmed.
Action follows student’s suicide attempt and denied certificate
Prof. Thyagaraja said the Syndicate met after media reports emerged that a research student had attempted suicide last month after she was denied a certificate during the convocation. He clarified that, as the sexual harassment inquiry against the professor was ongoing, the university had withheld the certificate pending procedural clearance.
The research student had lodged a formal complaint accusing Prof. Murthy of sexual harassment. Following this, the professor was placed under suspension while the inquiry progressed.
“To send a message of zero tolerance against sexual harassment, the Syndicate has decided to send Prof. Murthy on compulsory retirement,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
He added that the student would receive her convocation certificate upon payment of the requisite fee.
University denies allegations of caste discrimination
Responding to the student’s claim that her certificate was withheld because she belonged to a Dalit community, the Vice Chancellor said the university had not discriminated against any individual on the basis of caste, creed, or religion.
He noted that the student had been awarded a research fellowship of ₹3.76 lakh, her PhD notification remains valid, and she is currently working as a principal in a college. “Many students belonging to Dalit communities were issued convocation certificates,” he added.
Inquiry conducted as per UGC and POSH guidelines
Registrar Santosh Kamagouda said that the inquiry into the student’s allegations was conducted in line with UGC norms and the POSH Act. He confirmed that the internal committee had indicted Prof. Murthy, leading to his suspension.
Although the student later withdrew her complaint, Kamagouda emphasised that the university followed due process and moved forward with disciplinary action based on the inquiry findings.
