Bengaluru leads state with highest number of fake news cases
Bengaluru has topped the list of districts in Karnataka for the number of individuals booked for spreading fake news. According to a recent statement by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the Legislative Council, between 2021 and 2024, a total of 247 cases were registered across the state for spreading misinformation on social media platforms, with Bengaluru city accounting for 99 of these cases.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of social media monitoring to prevent the spread of harmful fake news that disrupts societal harmony. To this end, Social Media Monitoring Cells (SMMCs) have been set up at district and police station levels, along with vigilant monitoring by secret informants and beat staff. Special units, including fake accounts on social media, are also used to track individuals responsible for disseminating false information.
The Chief Minister highlighted that legal action is being taken against those spreading provocative messages and hate speech, with a system in place to monitor and take action against offenders. WhatsApp groups have been created in each police station area, involving both the public and police personnel to help collect information on fake news spreaders.
