Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bangalore Hotels Association (BBHA) has appealed to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to intervene in the prolonged road repair works across the city, stating that businesses have suffered nearly 50% revenue loss due to delays. The association has also sought a 50% reduction in property tax, garbage tax, electricity charges, excise duty, and licence fees to ease financial strain.

Hotels hit by prolonged road projects

BBHA president PC Rao said hotels and eateries on key stretches such as Sita Circle Road, Dr Rajkumar Road, Masjid Road, Platform Road (Seshadripuram), and Mission Road have been badly affected by incomplete road works.

“No road construction is being completed within the stipulated timeframe. Projects that should take three months are dragging on for over a year,” Rao noted.

The association pointed out that businesses are struggling to maintain their establishments, with fixed expenses such as rent, salaries, and licence fees adding up to ₹1.25 lakh per month.

Call for government relief

In a letter to the Deputy CM, the association said that a 50% cut in taxes and utility charges would help establishments survive until projects are completed. The BBHA also emphasised that other businesses, including bakeries, sweet shops, and bars, have been similarly impacted.

Impact on residents and pedestrians

The roadworks have not only hit business owners but also inconvenienced residents. Pedestrians, particularly senior citizens and children, are facing difficulties navigating the dug-up and uneven stretches.

Conclusion

While the hotel association awaits a response from the state government, it has stressed that immediate relief is essential to prevent closures and job losses in the sector. With hospitality forming a crucial part of Bengaluru’s service economy, the appeal places renewed pressure on authorities to speed up civic works and provide financial support.
