Moving cities in India often comes with unexpected surprises, but for one Bengaluru resident, the biggest shock turned out to be the price of ironing clothes.
Sajith Pai, a venture capitalist who recently shifted from Noida to Bengaluru, triggered a lively social media discussion after sharing his surprise over the city’s ironing charges.
‘Ironing is surprisingly expensive here’
In a post on X, Pai said he had moved to Bengaluru earlier this month and was stunned by the difference in ironing costs compared to Noida.
According to him, ironing a single clothing item in Noida cost around ₹5, while rates in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar area ranged between ₹12 and ₹20 per piece.
He also mentioned that even people who had relocated from Mumbai reportedly felt Bengaluru’s ironing prices were unusually high.
LPG irons may be affecting prices
Pai suggested that the type of irons used in Bengaluru could be one reason behind the higher rates.
He observed that many ironing vendors in Bengaluru use LPG-powered irons instead of the traditional charcoal-based irons still common across several North Indian cities.
Referring to the Udhyam Foundation’s Istri Project, he noted that fuel costs and operating expenses may be contributing to the pricing difference.
He also wondered whether easier charcoal availability in NCR cities, possibly due to the large number of tandoor restaurants, indirectly helps keep ironing costs lower there.
Social media users compare city-wise rates
The post quickly went viral, with users from different cities sharing local ironing prices and experiences.
Some users from Mumbai, Surat, Hyderabad, and NCR regions revealed that rates varied widely depending on the city, ironing method, fuel type, and whether pickup-and-delivery services were included.
One Bengaluru resident described the situation as “BLR istri inflation”, saying rates increased sharply after LPG cylinder prices rose.
Debate reflects rising urban living costs
The discussion eventually turned into a broader conversation about how everyday living expenses differ dramatically across Indian cities.
Many users pointed out that while Bengaluru is known for startup culture and high living costs, few expected even basic household services like ironing to become part of the city’s affordability debate.
