Bengaluru’s historic markets, such as Russel Market, Johnson Market, and K R Market, are grappling with poor maintenance, overcrowding, and inadequate facilities. Russel Market, established in 1927, has been earmarked for reconstruction at a cost of ₹40 crore, but concerns have been raised about the lack of focus on its heritage value. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to modernize the space without incorporating conservation efforts, which many experts argue is essential for preserving its legacy.

Similarly, Johnson Market in Richmond Town, established in 1929, has fallen into disrepair. Despite being located near the Pink Line metro station, the market is largely deserted, with vendors operating outside due to deteriorating infrastructure. While the BBMP has sanctioned funds for repairs, vendors like Syed Zahiruddin of the Johnson’s Market Merchant Association claim the money is mismanaged and not properly utilized for necessary improvements.

K R Market, one of the largest in the city, also faces ongoing issues with waste management, illegal shops, and lack of amenities. The market has been impacted by land disputes, and despite promises for redevelopment under the Bengaluru Smart City initiative, basic facilities remain lacking.

These markets highlight the city’s struggle to balance modern development with the preservation of its historic identity. Experts argue for a comprehensive heritage management plan to address these issues while ensuring that vendors’ needs are met.
