Delayed Hi-Tech Markets Spark Concerns in Mangaluru

Under the Smart City initiative, hi-tech markets are being developed at prominent locations in Mangaluru, including Urwa, Alake, Mallikatte, Kankanady, and the Central Market. However, delays in progress have raised concerns among stakeholders.

Temporary markets, initially set up for vendors during construction, have become permanent for many shopkeepers. While construction at Kankanady, Mallikatte, and the Central Market is ongoing, the markets at Urwa and Alake remain largely unoccupied, frustrating locals and vendors.

Urwa Market, originally planned for vendors selling essentials like fish and vegetables, now houses government offices instead. Repeated attempts to award tenders for Urwa and Alake markets have failed due to lack of interest from contractors.

During a pre-budget meeting on January 8, activist Hanumanth Kamath urged a review of the situation, particularly the underutilized Urwa Market.

Corporator Naveen D’Souza noted that the Kankanady Market, built at a cost of ₹41 crore, is expected to be completed by mid-February, with tenders to be invited soon for operationalization. Mayor Manoj Kumar added that the Central Market and Kankanady Market are on track for completion by June or July. He also assured that vendors wishing to relocate to Urwa Market will have their demands addressed by the end of the month, though Alake Market faces similar hurdles.
