Bengaluru’s metro fares are set for a potential increase, with the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) scheduled to submit its recommendations to the government in the coming days. Following a public consultation on the matter, the fare hike is expected to impact Namma Metro commuters soon.
The city’s metro network, which spans roughly 76 kilometers, is the second-largest metro system in India after New Delhi’s. Currently, fares range from ₹10 to ₹60, with smartcard users receiving a 5% discount. The last fare revision occurred in 2017. According to reports, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is considering a 10-15% fare increase across the board.
A three-member panel, led by Justice R. Tharani, a retired judge of the Madras High Court, has been tasked with reviewing the fare structure. The committee also includes Satyendra Pal Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and E.V. Ramana Reddy, former Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka. The committee has carefully studied fare structures from various cities both within India and internationally to ensure a fair approach to any revisions.
As the metro network has expanded and ridership has grown, particularly with the Purple Line serving as a vital transport route for IT professionals in east Bengaluru, there is also increased demand for more trains to manage peak-hour congestion. The Fare Fixation Committee’s final report will soon be submitted to the government for approval.
