Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police have registered a case against three Instagram account holders for allegedly posting obscene, defamatory and provocative content targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the social media platform.
The case was registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station following a complaint filed by a member of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) legal cell.
FIR registered over objectionable Instagram video
According to the complaint, an Instagram account identified as ground.reality_india uploaded a 30-second video on July 16 carrying the caption, “Why is the Opposition party silent?”
The complainant alleged that the video contained defamatory, sexually explicit and derogatory remarks against Rahul Gandhi with the intention of insulting the dignity of an elected public representative.
Based on the complaint, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on July 27 and initiated an investigation into the matter.
Two more users also booked
Police have also named two other Instagram users—raashtravaadhi2 and manvithamanojsamanvi—for allegedly posting abusive and provocative comments on the same video.
Investigators are examining the social media posts, comments and digital evidence to determine whether offences under relevant provisions of the law have been committed.
Investigation underway
Officials said the Cyber Crime Police have launched an investigation and will examine the content uploaded on the platform before taking further action in accordance with the law.
No arrests have been reported so far, and the investigation is continuing.
