BENGALURU: A tragic incident was reported in Bannerghatta on Sunday, where a 41-year-old software engineer lost his life after being bitten by a snake hidden inside his footwear. The victim, identified as Manju Prakash, was an employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and resided in Ranganatha Layout.

Snake found inside Crocs

According to police, Prakash had returned home from a sugarcane shop around 12.45 pm. He took off his Crocs outside the house before going to his room. Some time later, his family members found him lying on his bed with a bleeding leg and foam at his mouth.

On checking the area, they discovered a dead snake next to his footwear and suspected that the reptile had been coiled inside the Crocs before biting him. A family member said that the snake had died of suffocation.

Medical history of victim

Relatives told police that Prakash had met with a bus accident in 2016 and had undergone surgery on his leg. Following the surgery, he had lost sensation in the affected limb.

The family recalled that Prakash had not noticed the snake bite because of the lack of sensation in his leg. His brother said, “On returning home, Prakash went to his room and slept. After nearly an hour, a labourer who visited our house noticed a snake just outside the pair of Crocs. Upon checking, we found that it was already dead.”

Declared dead at hospital

Soon after discovering his condition, Prakash’s family rushed him to a private hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The incident has raised concerns over the prevalence of snakes in semi-urban areas like Bannerghatta, where human habitation overlaps with snake habitats. Locals have urged residents to exercise caution while handling footwear or clothing left outside.
